Today’s orthodontics are almost unrecognisable compared to yesterday’s heavy, bulky metal wires and brackets.

At Sydney Laser Dental Care, orthodontics aims to help children and adults achieve an ideal bite and a straight, healthy smile. Care is available for children, teenagers and adults.

Orthodontics for Children

Orthodontics for children, called orthopaedics, can be as simple as maintaining space for erupting adult teeth, through expansion appliances, removable plates or partial braces.

Children tend to respond well to early treatment, as their bones are still developing and are easier to guide into proper alignment. Pre-treatment may reduce treatment time and the severity of problems, and can lower the chance of removing healthy adult teeth later due to crowding.

Teenage Orthodontics

We can begin orthodontic treatment for adolescents after all the adult teeth have come through, at around age 11 to 13. An assessment helps determine the most appropriate treatment for your child’s needs.

Treatment options vary, but most commonly involve fixed braces. Orthodontic treatment usually takes around 6 to 24 months, during which we carefully monitor your child’s progress with regular appointments to adjust and maintain the braces.

Adult Orthodontics

Many adults take up orthodontic treatment later in life. Tooth-coloured braces and clear aligners are more discreet than metal braces, which appeals to adults who would prefer a less visible option during treatment.

Adult treatment can correct alignment problems that extend back to childhood, or that developed later in life as a result of missing teeth.

Clear Aligner Treatment

One of the most popular orthodontic treatments for adults is a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that place gentle pressure on the teeth, guiding them into position.

The aligners are removable, allowing you to eat and clean your teeth as normal, and are replaced approximately every two weeks. Depending on your circumstances, treatment may take between 6 and 18 months.

Lingual Orthodontics

We also offer an orthodontic program designed for minor to moderate crowding in the upper or lower six front teeth. Specially designed braces are placed on the inside surface of the teeth, where they are far less visible.

This discreet approach often needs only two to five appointments. Because the braces sit behind the teeth, most people find they have little effect on speech or eating.

Choosing the Right Orthodontic Option

The most appropriate treatment depends on your age, tooth position, bite and oral health. An assessment helps determine the corrective treatment that suits your circumstances.

An examination with Sydney Laser Dental Care will enable us to explain your options and provide an accurate timeframe for your treatment.

Orthodontics FAQs

Cost depends on the appliance used and how long treatment runs. Ask what a quoted price includes: consultations, X-rays, the appliance, retainers and follow-up reviews. Our Pyrmont dental clinic accepts the major health funds through HICAPS, so any orthodontic rebate on your health fund extras can be claimed at your visit. We also offer payment plans through the National Dental Plan.

Treatment usually takes about one to three years. You will need regular check-ups along the way, each running 30 to 60 minutes. Your dentist will give you a clearer estimate once your teeth, bite and X-rays have been assessed as part of your treatment plan.

Usually, yes. Teeth tend to move back towards their original position over time, so a retainer helps hold them in place once braces come off. Some people wear one only at night, others full time. Your dentist will explain which applies to you before treatment starts.

There is no single right age. Your dentist will advise when your child should be assessed, based on how their teeth and jaws are developing. An assessment does not mean treatment. Early intervention is not right for every child, and the outcome is often simply to keep monitoring at routine check-ups during their children’s dentistry visits.

No. Aligners only work if worn for the recommended hours each day, and whether they can achieve the result you want depends on how much correction is needed. Complex cases involving significant tooth movement are often better handled with traditional braces. Which treatment options suit you comes from the assessment at our Pyrmont dental clinic, using X-rays and models.

Oral hygiene matters more than usual, because braces create extra surfaces where plaque can gather. If cleaning slips, or there is too much sugary food and soft drink, white spots or tooth decay can follow. We show you how to clean around the brackets and wires and keep preventive care running alongside your orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic treatment is not suitable while your teeth and gums are unhealthy, so gum disease and untreated decay need dealing with first. Your dentist will discuss what dental treatment comes first, so your orthodontics fits sensibly into your wider dental health.

Tell us before we start. Our experienced team takes a calm, unhurried approach with nervous patients, and gentle care with clear explanations makes more of a difference than people expect. Mild discomfort, and sometimes scratches or ulcers inside the mouth, are common when you first start wearing braces.

Sometimes. Alongside crooked or crowded teeth, orthodontic treatment is used for a poorly aligned jaw and for difficulty speaking, breathing or chewing. Straightening can also stop damage from a bad bite and reduce tooth wear.

Often, yes. Straightening the teeth first can change what cosmetic dentistry is needed afterwards, so the sequence is worth discussing early. Because general, preventive and cosmetic services sit alongside orthodontics at our practice, your smile goals can be planned as one sequence aimed at healthy smiles and long-term oral health.

Our clinic is in The Atrium on Union Street, a convenient location with easy access for patients across inner Sydney. To arrange an examination or discuss your dental needs, contact our team or seek advice at your next visit.

Note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
